Stay Well

Have you a Long term Health condition? Are you keeping warm?

We would like to remind our members that with winter not that far away, there are important things we need to be doing ie Having a flu injection as well as ensuring our homes are warm enough for the colder days ahead.

Health organisations across the county are urging those with underlying health conditions to stay well this winter by protecting themselves against flu.

How to protect against flu: The flu jab is free of charge for people who have a long-term health condition such as: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), bronchitis or emphysema, diabetes; heart, kidney or liver disease, or have suffered a stroke.

Flu on top of health conditions like these can easily develop into something very serious and could cause serious complications such as pneumonia. The quick and simple flu vaccination will help reduce the risk of serious illness, hospitalisation and even death amongst those most at risk. This link will tell you more: http://shropshire.gov.uk/news/2017/10/long-term-health-condition/

Carers: If you look after someone who is elderly or has a disability and they cannot manage without your help, you too should have a flu jab. Click here for more information. http://shropshire.gov.uk/news/2017/10/flu-vaccination-carers/

To keep well, it is important we keep warm too.

Shropshire Council recently re-tendered the Keep Shropshire Warm service, to provide a free & impartial affordable warmth service across the County. Marches Energy Agency (MEA) will run the service in partnership with the Council. This “Keep Shropshire Warm” poster tells you more about how to get Free and Impartial Energy Advice (call Keep Shropshire Warm on 0800 112 3743 or via  [email protected]) , Heating and Insulation Grants as well as Age UK Energy Checks.

Getting to Hospital, What are the Issues?

As soon as the increase in parking charges at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital were announced we felt it important to share with you on this website as these increases will affect many of our members, families and friends. Healthwatch Shropshire would like to hear from you about your experience of getting to our local hospitals.

Brian, Information Officer at Healthwatch Shropshire told SDN “Getting to hospital for outpatient appointments, regular treatment and visiting relatives is in the spotlight at the moment. Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital trust have announced a rise in car parking charges at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital. Community transport schemes are facing an uncertain future with national discussions of changes to licensing. Hospital non-emergency transport services are under pressure from increasing demand and budget constraints.

He continues “Do you use community transport or hospital transport? How was your experience? How will the increased car parking charges affect you?

The local independent health and social care consumer champion, Healthwatch Shropshire, is asking the people of Shropshire to share their experiences of getting to and from hospitals so these can be fed into the debate”.

SDN encourages you to tell Healthwatch how it is for you and your friends and family. You can do this by contacting Healthwatch Shropshire either by telephoning 01743 237884 or emailing [email protected] or by using Web form: http://www.healthwatchshropshire.co.uk/content/speak-out
