Telephone: 0845 608 1222 (8 am-6 pm Monday to Friday to find out about services in your area)

Address: Royal Voluntary Service, Cardiff Gate, Beck Court, Cardiff Gate Business Park, CARDIFF, CF23 8RP

To mark our 75th anniversary, WRVS have relaunched as Royal Voluntary Service. Along with a new name, we also have a new logo, and a new slogan: ‘together for older people’ Research shows that the name WRVS (which stood for Women’s Royal Voluntary Service) did not reflect what we do, and hindered new people understanding and feeling inspired by our work. ‘Royal Voluntary Service’ is more easily understood; it conveys a sense of our history and belief in the power of volunteering, as one of the largest volunteer organisations in Britain  It is also more inclusive, showing that we are here for men as well as women.

Older people tell us there are five key conditions that need to be in place to live well:

  • Respect for who I am
  • I can get the help I want
  • I feel in control
  • I feel that I belong
  • I have people I can trust’

RVS can help:

In the home: Meals on Wheels, Home library services, Good Neighbours, Community transport

In the community: Lunch clubs, Social centres and community clubs, Information centres and cafes, Community centres and cafes

In hospitals: Hospital shops and cafes, Home from Hospital, Greeting and guiding, Patient support, Gifting

  • Cycling4All Shropshire is a new community group that wants to increase all-ability cycling opportunities in Shropshire. We are working to raise awareness of what is already on offer and to increase the chances to take part and get new people to take part. There are currently outdoor sessions running at several locations across Shropshire including, Shrewsbury Sports Village, Cae Glas Park, Oswestry and South Shropshire Leisure Centre, Ludlow. It is easy to take part and you can just come along on a drop in basis or contact the centres to ask about pre- booked sessions. There are sessions that run through the school holidays which gives an opportunity for the whole family to join in. The activities we currently offer are:
    • Access to a range of adaptive cycles
    • Supported sessions where there is a trained person on hand to help you choose the right cycle and enjoy your ride
    • Opportunities for using the adaptive cycles during the school holidays so families can take part.
    • Open sessions where the participants can come along on a drop in basis and change bikes as required or desired during the session
    • Block and regular bookings
    • Out of hours, carer led, individual and group sessions for WFA trained carers (there is an induction process to complete)
    • Outdoors riding on an enclosed track built to British Cycling Standards
    • Outdoor riding on an enclosed MUGA or leisure space

Everyday Life and Leisure; Motoring and Transportation

Transport – Community Transport for Telford and Wrekin Area

Telford Community Transport ceased trading on 26th April 2013.

The community transport service was launched in this form in 2000 and has since provided transport for hundreds of pensioners and vulnerable people across the borough. All of the scheme’s minibuses were wheelchair accessible and easily accessible for people who struggled with steps.

“We receive no support, funding or subsidies of any kind and can no longer afford to subsidise the service ourselves”.

Royal Voluntary Service volunteers may help with:

  • mobility services so older people can still get out and about in their community. Tel: 01743 240271.
  • undertake some 90,000 journeys on behalf of older people. These may be trips to and from hospital or to a GP appointment. Equally, these may be trips to the shops or into town journeys that enrich lives and really add to the pleasure of day-to-day living. Re Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin. Tel: 01743 240271.
  • Visits to hospital and the GP surgery can be stressful so the help and support of a Royal Voluntary Service volunteer often proves invaluable. Our volunteers accompany older people, arrange care for pets and are there in the first few weeks following a hospital visits. Royal Voluntary Service volunteers will also collect prescriptions and help cook meals. Local service covering: Bridgnorth, North Shropshire, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Atcham, South Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin (Shropshire) To apply and access this Call: 0845 608 0122

This complements our community mission work which supports churches to make their communities a better place to live. We welcome and work with people of all faiths and none.
