Event description: Note change of date due to Bank Holiday Monday on 22nd April! We are meeting at Shrewsbury Flaxmill and will be joined by Richard, a man of great knowledge. There will be a short animated film which charts the history of the building and its people as well as an opportunity to listen to oral history recollections of people who worked at the Maltings and who were barracked there during the World War II.

SLOG’s groups offer all kinds of interesting and adventurous activities to encourage people who have sight loss to keep active, stay confident, meet and make new friends and have some fun. Please contact us for a programme.

Sight Loss Opportunity Groups (SLOGs) Activities-April 2019

All sessions are FREE unless otherwise stated.

Oswestry Group meets on Wednesday 3rd April 10 am to 12 noon at Oswestry Library, 9 Arthur Street, Oswestry SY11 1JN

We will be joined in April by Amanda Reed from the Macular Society. Amanda will be talking to us about a range of gadgets available to help around the home.

Ludlow Group meets on Monday 8th April 10.30 am -12.30 pm at Ludlow Assembly Rooms, 1 Mill Street, Ludlow SY8 1AZ

We are meeting at St Peters Church and will be joined by Millie, from Grow Cook Learn. Millie will be putting you through your paces with a cookery session, however, we are not aware of what is on the menu!

Shrewsbury Cycling at Sundorne Sports Village-Wednesday 17th April 11 am-12 noon

Our regular cycling session at Sundorne Sports Village will be taking place.

Due to the costs there will be a minimum number of 4 to participate.  Should you wish to take part, please book yourself on by ringing on 01743 342168/342163 or emailing us at [email protected] or [email protected]  We need to know by 15:00 pm on the 3rd Monday of each month before the event on the Wednesday.

You can of course cycle at the Sports Village, every Wednesday, 13:00 – 15:00, for more information please contact Christian Smith the Sports Development Officer at Shrewsbury on 0345 0007 002.

Anyone who would appreciate a quieter time to shop may like to take up this opportunity. While lights can not be dimmed, there will be no tannoy announcements and no music. It will be quieter with No roll cages on shop floor to cause noise.

  • Try out electronic magnifiers which makes text easier to read.
  • Try a reading machine that will read your post and newsletters to you.
  • Change setting on a laptop to make text larger and to set up shortcuts to sites frequently used.

Sight Loss Opportunity Groups (SLOGs) Activities-March 2019

We will be joined in March by John from Remap, a UK charity.  John will be telling us about how they create and adapt equipment to help people achieve independence and a better quality of life.  You will also have the opportunity of handling some of the custom made items.

British Blind Sport

BBS National Youth Swimming Gala 2019

British Blind Sport is pleased to confirm the 2019 date for the charity’s annual National Youth Swimming Gala as Saturday 30th March.

Hosted by British Blind Sport, this event has been held successfully for over 20 years and is the only VI specific youth swimming competition in the UK, attracting participants from across the country. Open to all abilities, whether you are a beginner or competitive swimmer, come and have a go! Free entry for all blind and partially sighted children aged between 8 to 17 years old.

There is the chance of Free, one to one and small group lessons for those children aged 5-17 years of age, who may not feel confident enough to take part in the swimming gala but would like to learn the basic principles of how to swim.

Events

Swimming events for freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle relay and medley relay 25m, 50m and 100m.

Date: Saturday 30th March 2019 from 12.30 pm to 5 pm
