Your Voice Christmas 2018

This edition of Your Voice has a festive feel – download your copy below!

You will find out how to get your hands on SDN’s Christmas Cards – with designs by Members – and how people with and without disabilities can enjoy a creative Christmas carol service. There is an invitation to the final SDN Members’ Meeting of the year – come along in festive dress if you wish!

We thank our brilliant volunteers, fundraisers and supporters, and we look forward to making a difference together again in the year ahead. There are features, too, on a successful scheme to put unsold food from supermarkets to good use and on new funding for services for people with deafness and hearing loss in Shropshire.

SDN Bucket Collection

End Date:
14th November 2018

Start Time:
1000

End Time:
1600

Event title: SDN Bucket Collection

Weblink: www.shropshire-disability.net
Name: Shropshire Disability Network Management Committee
Email: [email protected]
Telephone: 07780 852 229
Event description: Would you please help SDN raise awareness of our work at Oswestry, while having a cash collection for our funds? Your Management Committee really appreciates any help you can give us , We thank the staff at Morrisons Oswestry for allowing this to happen.

Why do we need to raise money for SDN? Unfortunately like all charitable organisations we need finance to operate. We can only operate if we fund-raise as that is our main source of income!

Our shopping list is ongoing but below we give you an idea of why we need to have these collections.

  • Insurance-we have to have insurance to operate, this month we will pay out around £475
  • SDN Meetings- We have our AGM and Members meeting, cost around £150 each
  • Volunteer Expenses-we re-Imburse volunteers for out of pocket expenses ie car parking, it may not be much but it can mount up and we do not want volunteers to feel they cannot help due to costs.
  • Website-we are continually trying to improve it with upgrades, having a bespoke website means we have costs as well as annual hosting fees, this costs around £800 a year.
  • Stationery-we need paper, envelopes, postage stamps, leaflets printed, updating our information stands means we need laminating pouches, velcro etc badges, labels etc to operate.
  • Equipment-we need banners, stands, USB pens, projector and the list goes on.

On the day we will have a selection of leaflets available and shoppers will have opportunity to talk to us.We need and want to engage with our membership, spread the word about SDN to others who may benefit from knowing about us. We need volunteers to help us throughout the day. so if you feel you can help us, please call 07780 852 229 or email [email protected] to offer help for an hour or two.

By giving us your time you are helping to finance our group as “time is money”. We always work in 2′s & 3′s so if you want to be with a friend to help please tell us as we appreciate that as well.

Shropshire Council 250-253

Prevention services survey

Start Date:
18th May 2018

End Date:
1st July 2018

Start Time:
00.01

End Time:
23.59

The voluntary and community sector (VCS) plays a vital role in enabling vulnerable people to keep their independence, keep well and participate in activities to retain their quality of life, have respect and feel valued. The VCS delivers many ‘preventative’ services which could be anything that you use, visit, look up/google, read, attend and so on, that help you or the person you support to stay healthy, safe and independent, and therefore not need more ‘formal’ support and care services.

Preventative services could involve:

  • Provision of information and advice
  • Practical support in the home
  • Assistance with welfare benefits
  • ‘Good neighbour’ schemes
  • More specialist input, for example support for people with autism, sight loss or at risk of homelessness

Shropshire Council Adult Services team is currently working with over 30 VCS and housing organisations, some of which are funded by us, others not, to plan how preventative services will look in future. We’re also planning to seek the views of people who use, or may use, preventative services and those of their carers.

The aim of this review is to make sure we’re commissioning the right outcomes for the right people, which will make the biggest difference to individuals (and to council and health budgets).
